Face Masks Are Messing Up Facial Recognition Software

While face masks are meant as a way to protect us it may be doing its too job too well.

A new report says matching a picture of a person wearing a digitally added face mask to a different photo of the person without the facial recognition failed to match 5% to 50% of the time.

The reason it can’t match is because blocking part of the face means there is less information for the software to use to actually make a match.

So why is this an issue? Facial recognition software is used in a range of products and services like unlocking your smartphone and passing through a security checkpoint.
