Yes, you can be ticketed for a peeling license plate in New York. If it hasn’t happened to you yet, you’ve probably seen hundreds of vehicles driving around the Capital Region with plates that are barely readable due to the lamination coming off.
But, you can get a free replacement from the DMV. Here are the steps:
Email [email protected] and be sure to include your current plate number in the subject line. In your email, include your name (as it appears on your registration) along with address, a daytime phone number as well as a photo of the peeling plate. The DMV will mail you a new set of plates. Please note, you will get a new plate number.
