Haunted Tours of the NYS Capitol to Begin in October

Did you know that one of the most notoriously haunted sites in the area is the State Capitol? Back in 1911, a devastating fire destroyed part of the building. The night watchman, Samuel Abbott, died in the blaze. Many have said his ghost still wanders the halls at night. Those who’ve stayed late have heard the sounds of jingling keys, doors opening and closing, and shadowy figure that appears and disappears.
In addition, it is also said that two former presidents have visited the Capitol after their death.

Every year guided ghost tours of the Capitol are offered by the state Office of General Services. Tours begin on October 3rd and run through October 31st with the following schedule:

  • Monday through Thursday, 5:00 P.M. & 6:00 P.M.; Fridays, 3:00 P.M., 5:00 P.M., and 6:00 P.M.
  • Tours start at the information desk located in the Capitol’s State Street Lobby.
  • No tours will be offered on Columbus Day, Monday, October 10.
  • REGISTRATION REQUIRED. For groups of 10 or more, please contact the Plaza Visitor Center at 518-474-2418 to arrange a tour.
