A street in Albany, New York was officially renamed on Thursday in honor of Catherine and Adam Blake, two Black entrepreneurs who played a vital role in revitalizing downtown Albany. Steuben Street is now known as Blake Way, in recognition of the couple’s contributions to the community.

In 1878, the Blakes opened the Kenmore Hotel on North Pearl Street. After Adam’s death, Catherine expanded the business and became a well-respected business owner in her own right. Both Catherine and Adam fought to end segregation, and their legacy continues to inspire those who work towards equality and inclusivity.

The renaming of Steuben Street to Blake Way is a significant way to honor the Blakes and their impact on the Capital Region. It’s also an important reminder of the ongoing fight for equity and diversity.

In addition to the street renaming, the Blake Annex, a nonprofit organization run by the United Way, is working to preserve the Blakes’ legacy. The organization offers a space for nonprofit leaders to collaborate and exchange ideas, keeping the spirit of Catherine and Adam Blake alive in the community.
