NewsChannel 13 put together a retrospective of a historic event in the Capital Region 43 years ago. A huge fire broke out at the Port of Albany causing evacuations within a mile radius as fears grew that the fire could rapidly spread to other industrial sites along the Port.

It started around 10am on September 7th, 1980. A truck caught fire between two oil tankers and spread. Firefighters were able to get it under control until a pump blew up, knocking out any water pressure. Foam and chemicals were brought in to fight the fire, but were unsuccessful in containing it. Eventually, the site was evacuated and hospitals prepared for a calamity.

At the end, over a million dollars worth of damage had been done and a total of nine people were injured. There were no deaths.
