A genetically modified pig kidney has successfully provided "life-sustaining kidney function" over a seven day clinical study! According to Jayme Locke, the lead author of the paper, this is a huge step forward in getting clearance to trial it in a human.
With kidney disease killing more people yearly than breast or prostate cancer, this could help more than 800,000 Americans who are living with kidney failure and nearly 90,000 people waiting for a kidney transplant.
