It will be up for auction in May

After more than a decade of planning and over $100,000 in grants, the City of Mechanicville is putting its historic train station up for auction. The station, once considered key to revitalizing the city’s downtown, will be sold to the highest bidder on Friday, May 2, at 11 a.m. at the Mechanicville Senior Center. The minimum bid is set at $30,000.

The North Second Avenue depot, which the city acquired for $1 in 2012, dates back to the late 1800s and once connected passengers to Albany and Saratoga Springs. Despite restoration grants and clean-up work, the building was never fully rehabilitated.

Now boarded up and crumbling, the depot is being sold to return the property to the tax rolls. While some residents and former committee members are frustrated by the move, city officials say they hope the site can still serve a productive purpose.

Would you take on the challenge?
