In the heart of Vermont, a tale of heroism unfolded that has left the community in awe. A Vermont State Police trooper, whose courage and quick thinking saved the life of an 8-year-old girl, has become a beacon of hope and a testament to the dedication of law enforcement officers. On a frigid winter day, the tranquility of the Vermont landscape was disrupted by a distress call. An 8-year-old girl and her 6-year-old sister had fallen into a freezing pond near Cambridge, Vermont. The 80-year-old property owner was able to get the 6-year-old to safety but was unable to reach the 8-year-old near the center of the pond. The call was received by the Vermont State Police, who immediately dispatched Trooper Michelle Archer, who thankfully was only minutes away, to the scene.

With great effort, Archer managed to pull the girl back to the shore where Trooper Keith Cote checked if the girl was okay before rushing her to an ambulance that was already on site.  The child was taken to a hospital in Burlington with injuries that at first were thought to be life threatening but amazingly she made a full recovery and is now back home.

The community has hailed Trooper Archer and Cote as heroes. Their bravery and dedication to duty have not only saved a life but also served as a reminder of the selfless service that law enforcement officers provide every day. The Vermont State Police Department has commended Archer for her heroic act, reinforcing their commitment to the safety and well-being of the community and recommend the two troopers as well as the 80-year-old property owner for the agencies life saving award.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can lurk even in the most serene settings. It also underscores the importance of teaching children about the risks associated with icy bodies of water. However, above all, it highlights the bravery, dedication, and quick thinking of our law enforcement officers, who are always ready to risk their lives to save others.  In the end, the story of Trooper Archer and the 8-year-old girl she saved from a freezing pond is one of hope, courage, and community. It's a testament to the everyday heroes among us, who, without hesitation, step up when duty calls.

Check those tickets because there was a big winner in Albany! Cumberland Farms at 1870 Western Avenue has recently become the talk of the town selling a whopping $50,000 ticket, turning an ordinary day into an extraordinary one for one lucky customer.

The Cumberland Farms store in the heart of Albany, is a popular spot for locals to grab their morning coffee, fill up their gas tanks, and, of course, try their luck with lottery tickets. On this particular day, the stars aligned for one fortunate individual who decided to purchase a Powerball ticket.

The winning ticket matched four of the five white balls and the Powerball, enough to secure the $50,000 prize. The numbers drawn that day were 14, 20, 39, 65, 67, and the Powerball was 2. The Power Play multiplier, which could have doubled the prize to $100,000, was not part of this winning ticket.

The news of the winning ticket spread quickly throughout the community, sparking excitement and a flurry of ticket-checking. The identity of the winner remains unknown, as they have yet to come forward to claim their prize. According to the New York Lottery rules, winners have up to one year from the date of the drawing to claim their winnings.

The sale of this $50,000 Powerball ticket has certainly added a dash of excitement to the daily routine of Albany locals. As the city waits for the winner to come forward, the buzz continues. Who knows? The next big winner could be just around the corner, perhaps even at the same Cumberland Farms store. After all, in the game of Powerball, anything is possible.

People of Troy have some good neighbors. Like Mark Morrine and Mark Sweener. Here are their stories of how they made a difference for people in our community.

Mark Morrine is the owner of Big Bellies in Lansingburgh. He saw one of his patrons who is older walk into his establishment and eat as they do everyday. This time as they walked outside he walked with them. He wanted to make sure that she did not fall and hurt herself during the snow frenzy we had here in the capital region. Mark walked her all the way home. This is what he said about it,

"I was walking a customer of mine home,” he said. “She’s an older lady. She’s one of our always customers that come in every day, so in this snow, I didn’t want her to walk home alone, so I walked her home so she got home safe, didn’t slip or fall."

Mark Sweener a resident of Troy while the snow was falling on Tuesday and he said,

"Apparently people are going to wait until it ends, but I like to get it done early so it doesn’t build all the way up."

He then clearing snow away from his aunts home while she was away.

Two great examples of the capital region doing amazing things for our neighbors and for our community. If you have stories like these two please let us know in the comments below.

As the weekend fast approaches, the city of Albany, New York, is buzzing with anticipation for the annual Ronald McDonald House Radiothon for the House that Love Built. This event, beginning on Friday, is a beacon of hope and a testament to the power of community spirit.

The Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) has been supporting families with sick children for decades, providing a "home-away-from-home" for families so they can stay close to their hospitalized child at little to no cost. The Albany chapter of this global non-profit organization is no exception, and their annual Radiothon is one of their most significant fundraising events.

The Radiothon will kick off early Friday morning, with local radio stations broadcasting like B95.5, Fly92.3, 100.9/107.1 The Cat, Jamz 96.3, and Magic 590am/100.5fm live with the Ronald McDonald House. The airwaves are filled with stories of hope, resilience, and the incredible impact that the Ronald McDonald House has on families navigating the challenging journey of childhood illness. These stories, shared by families who have stayed at the House, volunteers, staff, and community members, serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of this cause.

Listeners are encouraged to call in and make a pledge starting Friday by calling the phone room at 518-438-2655 with every dollar raised going directly towards supporting the operations of the Ronald McDonald House in Albany. On average, it costs around $120 per night to accommodate a guest family at the Ronald McDonald House. The funds raised during the Radiothon help to cover the cost of lodging, meals, and supportive services for families staying at the House.

Listeners are also encouraged to donate online through the home page of our stations websites as well as at RMHCofAlbany.org or by texting RMHCCR to 56651. Our goal during the 2024 Radiothon is to raise enough to fund 1,000 nights of comfort, hope and love at “The House That Love Built. Since opening their doors in 1982, “The House That Love Built” has welcomed more than 23,000 guest families and started as an 8 bedroom home on S. Lake Avenue. Today, there are 25 private guest rooms – each with its own bathroom – across three connected houses, just steps away from the Bernard & Millie Duker Children’s Hospital at Albany Med. The House provides a home away from home for approximately 400 families every year.

The Radiothon is not just a fundraising event; it's a community gathering. Despite the serious nature of the cause, the atmosphere is filled with positivity and warmth. Local businesses, schools, and community groups are also getting involved, hosting their own mini-fundraisers or donating goods and services to be auctioned off on-air.  Saturday, you can even join us and donate in person at Crossgates Mall from 10a to 4p with volunteers in THREE locations, outside of Best Buy, in front of Apex Entertainment, and in front of Burlington.

As the Radiothon wraps upon Saturday, there's a palpable sense of accomplishment and unity. The event serves as a reminder of the power of community and the difference that can be made when people come together for a common cause. The Ronald McDonald House Radiothon in the Capital Region is more than just a fundraiser; it's a testament to the strength of human spirit and the power of compassion.

The town of Brunswick could be the Capital Region's newest home home for a new Chick-fil-A, joining Clifton Park and East Greenbush. The Times Union says a developer from Clifton Park is said to be proposing a Chick-fil-A, Chipotle, and mattress store along Hoosick Rd, across the street from Walmart.

The plan is being reviewed by town officials. One of the main concerns is traffic along Route 7. The review process is expected to take several months before a decision is made.

A new restaurant is expected to open in downtown Albany this February at what was the home of 'The Bishop'. 'Viva Empanadas', which already has one Capital Region location at the Galleria 7 in Latham, will be taking over the now vacant spot on Pearl Street.

Owner Veronica Agama tells News 10 that an Albany location is another great opportunity based on the success of her Latham restaurant.

I am keeping our spot in the Galleria as we have dear clientele there that we love serving too,

Agama says she plans on expanding the menu at the Albany location to include tapas and a full bar. She hopes to be open by mid-February.

'The Bishop' had a four year run at their Pearl Street location, but closed in 2023.

A post on the Ballston Spa Fire Department Facebook page says the car is likely totaled and the town may be down a plow while it gets checked out for damage. The driver of the car was ticketed for following too closely.

The rumors have been swirling all week, along with snowfall predictions ranging from 2 to 24 inches. The exact pattern of the storm moving up the Atlantic coast is still being closely monitored, but with each passing day it looks like we may get our first significant snowfall for the Capital Region.

On Thursday afternoon the National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Watch for the Capital Region, the Hudson Valley, the Mohawk Valley and the Catskills. An expected 5-10 inches are possible when the snow begins falling Saturday afternoon and early evening. The snow will likely be heaviest overnight into Sunday. Complicating the matter, wind gusts could get up to 35 mph, causing visibility problems for drivers.

As with any storm, patterns can change so B 95.5 will keep you up to date on the latest. Since this would be the first (and certainly not last) significant storm of the season, be prepared with your shovel, snow brush, scraper, and be sure to top off your windshield wiper fluid.

What happened? The TGI Friday's location at Stuyvesant Plaza has apparently closed its doors for good, according to News 10. Apparently its last day of business was Tuesday 1/2. A public relations firm for the restaurant confirmed the closure and Stuyvesant Plaza has removed Friday's from their website. No reason was given as to why the restaurant shut down.

A number of other Friday's restaurants unexpectedly closed across the country on Tuesday, including several in Massachusetts.

There are two other Friday's locations in Clifton Park and Wilton, those remain open.

While the track of the storm and the actual severity of it are still unsure, there is a possibility that The Capital Region could see it's first big snow storm of the season.

Abbey Grant, a NWS meteorologist said -

“There is a decent chance for snow, potentially light with moderate periods,”

The storm is expected to arrive late Saturday night into Sunday morning. Obviously the timing could change between now and then. What we do know is the the temperatures in the area will be cold enough for actual winter weather, it's still too early to talk about how much we could get or where the storm will actually effect.

Ben Noll, who is a meteorologist from The Hudson Valley says that there is a moderate chance that the mid-Hudson Valley could see 6 inches or more on Saturday night.

No matter if the storm bring snow, rain or even a mix of both, this storm has the potential to impact a large portion of the Country, including The Capital Region.

Closed since 2020, the movie theaters at Wilton Mall are expected to reopen by February. Scene One Entertainment (formerly Bowtie Cinemas) has taken over managing the eight theaters within the mall. In a statement, Scene One CEO Joe Masher said they are just about ready to go:

The theater is in fantastic shape and the mall has maintained it beautifully since its pandemic closure. The developments happening around the mall are encouraging.

Moviegoers can expect some upgrades as well. Each cinema will feature new leather rocking hairs and wall to wall screens. One auditorium will boast a 2000 foot screen and enhanced Dolby surround sound.

Screen One also owns Schenectady's Movieland Cinemas and recently purchased Huck Finn's Playland.

If you travel the New York State Thruway on a regular basis, you'll see a spike in your E-Z Pass bill. The State Thruway Authority has raised tolls by 5% effective January 1, 2024. The increase averages out to 4.9 cents per mile.

If you don't have E-Z Pass, the toll charge will be even higher, by as much as 75%. Those without E-Z Pass will be billed via the mail.

The Thruway Authority says the increase was necessary for infrastructure repair and upkeep, as well as to make up for the loss of revenue during Covid in 2020.

The popular TV series, The Gilded Age has been renewed for a third season on HBO. The show, set in New York City in the late 1800's, has used the Capital Region for its backdrop in seasons 1 and 2. The show has also cast many Capital Region residents as extras when in the area.

Durant's at Van Schaick opened up for business this past March. Unfortunately, on January 27th, they will be closing their doors for good.

Owner Tommy Durant, who also runs Signal 33 BBQ in Cohoes, is blaming the nature of seasonal business for the restaurants closure.

Durant said -

“Restaurant work certainly isn’t easy. It takes commitment, creativity, agility, thick skin, and a really good sense of humor to keep it all together,”

If you've never been to Durant's at Van Schaick, the food is said to be "elevated tavern fare" and served a number of different sandwiches, burgers and appetizers on top of entrees like stuffed haddock, Cajun jambalaya and more.

The announcement was made on the restaurants Facebook back on December 1st.

If you would like to give Durant's at Van Schaick a try before they close, they're open Tuesday through Sunday from 11am - 9pm.

For nearly 35 years, Different Drummer's Kitchen Company was located in Albany's Stuyvesant Plaza. In 2022, the property signed a lease with a new tenant - a national chain called Sur La Table, which sells similar cookware and kitchen items. This left Different Drummer's owner Andrew Meisberger without a location for his store.

Eventually, he was able to strike up a deal with Crossgates Mall. Meisberger decided he would try it for a year at the new location, but he says it's been a struggle maintaining and increasing his customer base. He has decided not to continue, telling the Times Union

I am so conflicted. I didn’t want to close it, but I couldn’t convince myself that keeping it open was the smart business decision.

It's not known if Meisberger plans on reopening at another location, but he plans to continue his current store in Crossgates until February.

Albany International Airport officials are expecting a massive surge in travel this weekend as the Christmas holiday approaches. If you plan on catching a flight this weekend, there are a number of things to know to make your experience as seamless as possible.

  • All travelers are urged to arrive at the airport no less than TWO HOURS prior to their flight’s scheduled departure. Doing so will allow ample time to park, check bags if necessary, go through the security checkpoint and arrive at the departure gate.
  • Consider using alternate transportation to and from the airport. This will alleviate you having to find parking while also saving you time.
  • Check- in early either online or by using your airline’s mobile app. Doing so will save you time when you arrive at the airport, especially if you don’t need to check baggage.
  • Be sure you have all your documentation, such as identification, boarding pass and any other pertinent documents you may need.
  • Before packing, please visit www.tsa.gov to find out which items are prohibited from having in either your carry-on or checked luggage. Be sure also to check to ensure you’re not packing prohibited amounts of liquids, gels, creams, pastes or aerosols.
  • Traveling with children? Make sure there are no prohibited items in their luggage.
  • Consider TSA PreCheck to speed up and enhance your experience going through the security check point. Learn more at www.tsa.gov.

A big announcement was made on NewsChannel 13 Wednesday, long time anchor and reporter Elaine Houston - a staple on Capital Region TV for nearly 34 years - announced she is retiring.

Houston sat down with her co-anchor Mark Mulholland to discuss her long career and decision to retire. In 1990, Houston moved from Peoria, Illinois to the Capital Region to take on duties as a reporter for NewsChannel 13. She eventually became a weekend anchor and then an anchor for the channel's Live at 5 newscast, a position she held for more than 20 years.

Over the last three years, Houston has been pursuing and received her PhD in executive leadership and social justice from St. John Fisher University. Her last day on NewsChannel 13 will be December 29th.

As for what's next? She says after the last three years in school, she needs a good rest:

I'm gonna sleep for the next three months, I think and then I'll start working in the spring

The Sugar Fairy Bakes opened it's doors in Malta this past April and will now be closing for good. Shop owner Stacie Blair made the announcement back in November on her Facebook. Christmas Eve will be the last day.

Blair, at one point had 2 locations. One in Mechanicville and the other in Malta. Her Mechanicville store closed due to a lack of business, however she was using the kitchen in that building to make her baked goods since the Malta location didn't have the correct kitchen. The owner of the Mechanicville location is selling that building which leaves Blair without a kitchen. Stacie said that for her to build a compliant kitchen that would be approved by the NYS DOH and town of Malta, it would cost her $200,000.

Blair started The Sugar Fairy Bakes back in 2019 and was able to open her Mechanicville location in 2021. Her Malta location opened in April of this year.

If you're heading up or down 787, you'll notice Albany's decrepit concrete behemoth is now partially covered. The City of Albany has draped netting on two sides of the Central Warehouse. The netting was installed to keep large pieces of concrete from falling on the railroad tracks that run parallel to the building.

In 2022, the city declared a state of emergency and Amtrak was forced to cancel all trains from the Rensselaer station to Western New York due to concrete debris falling dangerously close to the tracks.

In October, there was talk between the building's new owners, the city of Albany and the county as to whether or not the structure can be rehabilitated or if it should be knocked down. Both options come with a hefty price tag.
