From stage to screen, take a look back at the icon's work

Legendary actor Tim Curry, best known for his iconic role as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, has died at the age of 80.

According to TMZ, Curry died at his home in Los Angeles on Tuesday night. His representative confirmed his death, though no cause of death has been disclosed. Curry had experienced serious health problems in recent years, including a major stroke in 2012 that affected his mobility.

Curry's career spanned nearly six decades across film, television, theater and voice acting. He first gained widespread attention after originating the role of Frank-N-Furter in the stage production of The Rocky Horror Show. He reprised the role in the 1975 film The Rocky Horror Picture Show, which eventually became a beloved cult classic.

Beyond Rocky Horror, Curry appeared in numerous memorable films. He played Wadsworth in Clue, Lord of Darkness in Legend, Rooster Hannigan in Annie and Long John Silver in Muppet Treasure Island. He also appeared in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York and The Hunt for Red October.

Horror fans may know Curry best for his portrayal of Pennywise the Dancing Clown in the 1990 television adaptation of Stephen King's It. The performance became one of his most recognizable roles and remained popular even after Bill Skarsgård took over the character for the later film adaptations.

Curry also had an extensive voice-acting career. Reuters reported that he voiced Captain Hook in Peter Pan and the Pirates and Nigel Thornberry in The Wild Thornberrys, among numerous other animated projects. His performance as Captain Hook earned him a Daytime Emmy Award.

His theater career was equally impressive. Curry received three Tony Award nominations for his work in Amadeus, My Favorite Year and Monty Python's Spamalot, according to the Associated Press.

Despite his health struggles, Curry continued working. He appeared in the 2024 horror film Stream and was set to reprise his role in the upcoming sequel, Stream 2: Sudden Death. TMZ reported that Curry completed his scenes for the sequel before his death.

Director Michael Leavy, who worked with Curry on the Stream films, expressed his grief following the actor's death and praised Curry's humor, warmth and presence. The filmmakers have said the sequel will honor Curry's legacy.

From Frank-N-Furter and Pennywise to Wadsworth, Lord of Darkness and his many animated characters, Curry created performances that crossed generations and genres. His distinctive voice, theatrical personality and willingness to embrace unusual characters made him one of the most recognizable performers of his generation.
