Rockefeller Tree Journey Begins: 11-Ton Giant Fell at Dawn

This morning in East Greenbush, a majestic 75-foot-tall, 45-foot-wide Norway spruce weighing 11 tons was carefully felled to begin its journey to Rockefeller Center ahead of the December 3 lighting ceremony. Donated by a local family and selected by Rockefeller’s head gardener, the tree will travel to Midtown Manhattan where it will be decorated with more than 50,000 LED lights and topped with a 900-pound Swarovski star. After decades standing on its home property, this giant will now illuminate the city and the nation remaining on display until mid-January before being repurposed into lumber for housing. As this iconic tree  begins its journey we're reminded once again that the holiday spirit begins in places both grand and local.
